Capacitive position sensor with the highest measuring accuracy

A unipolar capacitive sensor is a displacement sensor of direct measurements style. The capacitive sensor measures the changes in capacitance values between the polar face and the measured face by using the uniform electric field between them to realize high-precision measuring displacement. A noncontact measuring process ensures the highest resolution, linearity, and high bandwidth.

Different measuring bandwidths and ranges

Different measurement bandwidths can be set up by an E-E12 signal processor to meet the measurement requirements of different users. If the measured face is static or in low dynamic motion, a measurement bandwidth which can be as low as 0.1 Hz can be set to the sensor system; in the case that the measured face is in high dynamic motion, a measurement bandwidth, which can be as high as 5 KHz, can be set to enhance the dynamic measurement capability of sensor. The lower the measurement bandwidth, the higher the measurement resolution obtained by capacitive sensor.

For any columnar or flake unipolar capacitive sensor, the internal range amplification factor can be set to the E-E12 signal processor in the factory; the user can set the measuring range by choosing an amplification factor of 1x, 2x, and 5x. For example, the sensor with 100 μm physical measuring range can be used as an extended measuring range of 500 μm (maximum). In addition, the manufacturer will calibrate the sensor according to the final measurement range specified by the user and provide Linearity Test Report along with the goods. In the case of switching among different measurement ranges, the user needs to send the unipolar sensor and the signal processor back to the manufacturer for matching calibration. The smaller the sensor's final measuring range, the higher the resolution.

Internal Linearized System (ILS)

E-E12 multi-channel signal processing systems have high-order digital linearization functions, which reduce the measurement influence of non-parallel errors between the polar face and the measured face, and therefore further enhance the measuring linearity.

Signal processing systems in the E-E12 series have two types of housing: 9.5 inches for the E-E12.009 and of 19 inches for the E-E12.021, which can be used respectively for maximally fully matching the signal processing system of 9 channels and 21 channels. In each signal processing system, the number of measuring channels can be configured according to the integral multiple of 3.

Various communication interfaces available for digital communication

Signal processing systems in the E-E12 series have three types of communication ports: USB, RS232, and TCP/IP. In the industrial control environment, the RS232 interfaced can be selected for communication if there is no USB interface; when remote measuring is required, the TCP/IP Ethernet interface can be selected.

High-elasticity modular configuration

Signal processing systems in the E-E12 series can support the insertion work of signal-processing modules with different functions: They support both multi-channel measuring by the unipolar capacitive sensor and bipolar capacitive sensor. (http://www.pi.ws D-015 / D-050 / D-100 of PI Germany); in addition, signal processing systems in the E-E12 series are suitable for various high-accuracy applications for measuring the distances of different cable lengths.

Matching calibration by the manufacturer that enhances the measuring linearity

Users must order the sensor together with connecting cables, signal preamplifiers/converters (if necessary) and signal processors. At the end of manufacturing, for the whole system ordered, PI China will calibrate the linearity, set linearization, gain and offset, etc., eliminate the influence of cable capacitance in the process of calibration, and provide the Linearity Test Report to users along with the goods.

Linearity Test Report

The linearity of one measuring range can be calibrated by the unipolar capacitive sensor combined with the analog signal processor; during calibration, PI China measures and calibrates the linearity of the capacitive sensor with high-precision Zygo double-frequency laser interferometers and high-precision piezoceramic translation stages.
